Join us for this ISAC short class on the interpretations and re-interpretations of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. Each short class will examine a particular art work and place it in its historical context to see what this tells us about the interpretations and re-interpretations of Homer.

Week One: Murder of Agamemnon on a Greek red-figure vase and other ancient Greek depictions of Homer

Week Two: A statue of Penelope at Persepolis in Iran and connections between the Achaemenids and the Greeks

Week Three: A Gandharan relief of the Trojan Horse and how Greek materials travelled to Afghanistan/northwest Pakistan

Week Four: Robert Duncanson’s Land of the Lotus Eaters. Explore later interpretations of Homer, focusing on Duncanson’s re-imaging of the scene in the Odyssey based on Tennyson’s poem.

This class is pre-recorded.
