This study was intended as an introduction to a fresh approach to the understanding of Islamic early attitudes toward Qurʾanic commentary and toward the evolution and recording of Islamic tradition, as to both categories of content and methods of transmission. The first part of this work provides a historical background of the early development of written Islamic tradition. The second part is formed by the analysis and identification of fourteen documents.
