The Oriental Institute, part of the University of Chicago, is a world-renowned center for research focused on the archaeology and history of the ancient Middle East. Our museum houses a world-renowned collection of antiquities from the regions of ancient Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Sudan, Syria, and Turkey, mainly dating from between 10,000 BC and AD 650. These lands were called the "Orient" at the turn of the last century when University of Chicago archaeologists began unearthing many of the artifacts now on view in the museum.
