The Research Archives library is open to faculty, staff, students, members, and authorized guests of the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures and the University of Chicago. All others desiring to use the Research Archives library are expected to enroll as members of the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, fill out an application for research visit, and arrange for their research visit with the Director of the Research Archives library prior to their arrival. Visitors who do not make prior arrangements may be denied access.

Entrance into the Research Archives library is controlled by an electronic identification card reader. All authorized guests will need to arrange their visit prior to arrival in order to be issued a temporary identification card for access. Information on membership is available at the front desk in the lobby of the museum, at the museum store, or from the Membership department.

Library Classification System

By scholars, for scholars—our classification expedites the latest research results

  • Monographs = MON: LastName

    Shelved alphabetically by author in the monograph stacks

  • Reference = REF

    Reference materials are shelved on the elephant folio cases in the reading room, arranged by language family.

  • Series = S/XXX/99

    Shelved alpha-numerically by call number in the reading room

  • Elephant Folio = FOLIO/Z-99

    Shelved by case and shelf number in the elephant folio cases in the reading room

  • Journals = J/XXX/99

    Shelved alpha-numerically by call number on the upper level.

  • Folio = FOLIO: LastName

    Shelved alphabetically by author on the west wall of the monograph stacks

  • Areshian Collection = GAC

    Located in the GAC room across from the office

  • Pamphlets = PAM

    Filed alphabetically by author in archival boxes in the monograph stacks

  • MAP = MAP

    Located in the map drawers in the upper level journals suite

  • Special = Special Collections

    Available by request only
