Terms of Use

Introduction

The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC) of the University of Chicago makes its publications and digital resources available to support research, teaching, and public engagement with the ancient world. The following terms govern the use and reproduction of materials available through this website.

Copyright and Permitted Use

Unless otherwise indicated, ISAC publications and digital materials are protected by copyright and may not be reproduced, distributed, modified, or used commercially without appropriate authorization and licensing.

Materials made available under a Creative Commons or other open license may be used in accordance with the terms of that license. Publications designated CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, for example, may be downloaded for noncommercial purposes with appropriate attribution, provided that modified versions are not distributed.

Individual photographs, illustrations, or other materials incorporated into ISAC publications may be subject to separate copyright, credit, or reproduction requirements. The availability of a publication online does not necessarily grant permission for the independent reproduction of its constituent text, images, or other third-party materials.

Artificial Intelligence and Automated Use

Except as permitted by applicable law or an expressly applicable license, ISAC does not authorize the use of its copyrighted publications, images, or other digital materials for training, fine-tuning, or developing artificial intelligence models, or for compiling datasets for these purposes, without prior written permission.

Such uses must comply with all applicable copyright, licensing, and third-party rights restrictions. Access to, or downloading of, materials from this website does not, by itself, grant additional rights for AI development or other automated reuse.

Reproduction and Licensing Permissions

Permission is required to reproduce, publish, distribute, or otherwise reuse ISAC materials beyond the uses authorized by their applicable licenses or by law.

Requests are reviewed by the appropriate ISAC department. Conditions of use, required credit lines, and applicable reproduction or licensing fees may vary according to the material and its intended use.

For additional information, please consult the following resources:

To request permission, obtain digital images, or inquire about the reproduction of material from an ISAC publication, please complete the ISAC Digital Image and Reproduction Permission Request Form .

ISAC will review your request and direct it to the appropriate department. Submission of a request does not itself constitute permission to reproduce or reuse the requested material.
