The Center for Ancient Middle Eastern Landscapes (CAMEL) is inviting applicants for the 2024-2025 residency program. The program is specifically designed to provide professional career development opportunities for early career scholars through community support, systematic research feedback, public speaking practice, publication development and networking with scholars and institutions across the UChicago campus. The awardees are expected to be in residence in Chicago during the academic year but applications for shorter residencies will be considered. This is a non-compensated position. Residency offer will include a $500 travel and research allowance in the beginning of the residency term and a $500 honorarium at the end and upon the successful completion of the program requirements. Application review will begin on September 15.
The Residency Requirements
CAMEL Residence Fellows are expected to propose a project to work on during their year of residency. Ideally, they should aim to address a specific aspect of a bigger ongoing project, for example, applying a geospatial technique, software, concept, or methodology to their broader research. Fellows are expected to deliver two talks at UChicago, and to present a regular progress report during CAMEL monthly meetings. A formal project report (2000-4000 words) needs to be submitted to CAMEL at the end of residency.
Applicants at various stages of career from a wide range of disciplines, including archaeology, anthropology, history, and art history, who are interested in examining landscape histories and who are eligible to reside and carry out research in the United States are welcome to apply. Graduate students and junior postgraduate researchers are especially encouraged to apply.
