Southeastern Arabia today is a center of global commerce due to the vast oil resources of the region, with monumental structures rising out of the deserts and mountainous valleys of the UAE and Oman. But, this is not the first time such social complexity has appeared in this arid region. A decade of research at the World Heritage Site of Bat has she dnew light on this enigmatic society — how it arose, why it persevered, and ultimately why it collapsed.
