Serenella Mancini, PhD Candidate, Sapienza University of Rome, and Oriental Institute Collections Research Grant recipient, will discuss a type of pottery production extremely widespread in the Islamic world from the 9th to 14th century—unglazed mold-made relief ware. She will present evidence recently brought to light at Istakhr (Fars, Iran) by the Italian-Iranian Archaeological Mission and at Irbil (Iraqi Kurdistan) by the Italian Archaeological Mission. Indeed, these assemblages provide an overview of the technological aspects, decorative repertoire, and morphological characteristics of relief molded ware attested in southern Iran and northern Iraq during the entire period of its production.
