Harry A. Hoffner, Co-Founder of the Chicago Hittite Dictionary, Passes Away at 80

Harry Angier Hoffner, Jr., John A. Wilson Professor Emeritus of Hittitology at the University of Chicago, passed away on March 10, 2015. He was 80 years old. Dr. Hoffner co-founded the Chicago Hittite Dictionary in 1976 with Hans Gustav Güterbock. He was well-known for his work on Hittite myths and letters. In 2008, he published an important grammar of the Hittite language with Craig H. Melchert. Services were held on Tuesday, March 17 at College Church in Wheaton, IL.

The Past for Sale: New Approaches to the Study of Archaeological Looting

As highlighted in the recent UChicago News article Neubauer Collegium Conference Tackles Complex Issue of Archaeological Looting, the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society has established a project to address archaeological looting. "The Past for Sale: New Approaches to the Study of Archaeological Looting" brings together archaeologists, anthropologists, art historians, social scientists, public policy experts, and legal scholars, in hopes of finding better answers to one of the most intractable problems facing those who care about culture: how to stem the worldwide epidemic of looting of archaeological sites and shrines.
