The entirely revised form of a doctoral dissertation directed by N. Golb and accepted in 1988 by the University of Chicago, this study of Temple Scroll (11QTemple) uses redaction criticism to clarify the compositional history and purpose of the work. After surveying research on Temple Scroll, it delineates four major sources: the Deuteronomy Source, the Temple Source, the Midrash to Deuteronomy, and the Festival Calendar. It also discusses the laws added to these basic sources. Then it focuses on the final form of Temple Scroll and its redactor, his motives, and identity. Wise concludes that Temple Scroll was intended as an eschatological law for the land, was redacted ca. 150 b.c. by the Teacher of Righteousness, and was not a product of the Qumran community. A 38-page appendix provides a compositional analysis of Temple Scroll. [From a review in New Testament Abstracts 35 (1991) 135].
