AS 22. Old Babylonian Letters from Tell Asmar R. M. Whiting, Jr.
After more than a half a century since their discovery, the texts discovered at Tell Asmar (ancient Eshnunna) have been published. Whiting takes the first step towards a systematic publication of the Eshnunna archives with this publication of all the Akkadian letters unearthed at that site.
Whiting’s corpus, which covers the Ur III and Old Babylonian periods and includes fifty-five letters and three additional letter envelopes, demonstrates the obstacles in the way of achieving the goal of a sound publication of these texts. The texts are difficult in interpretation to such an extent that Robert Whiting has done almost the impossible in giving us a comprehensive treatment of this corpus.
An edition of all the letters, arranged chronologically, is given in transliteration, translation, and detailed philological commentary. Hand copies are supplied at the end of the book.
