This image was carved for Pekartror, a Kushite prince, during the era of Nubia’s rule over Egypt. Modeled after traditional Egyptian examples, this stela shows the prince in a typically Egyptian pose making an offering to commemorate his deceased mother. But Pekartror’s features and his attire are Nubian, as is his name, which includes the Nubian title pekar (crown prince). Discovered at Abydos, the site of Egypt’s national cemetery, the stela’s text describes how Pekartror came north from Nubia to arrange for the burial of his mother who had lived in Egypt.
